Every Canadian, including LLI students, must be busy on October. Thanksgiving day is Oct 8, and Halloween is Oct 31. Because both events are representing North America's culture, you should enjoy these events to knowing and understanding North America's culture. In this article I will introduce Thanksgiving day. But the article will include interesting facts you have not known before.
Thanksgiving day is one of the biggest holiday on Canada and the United State. Family come together and they thank and celebrate their harvest to God. Now day, the meaning of appreciating God is getting weak. Nevertheless, Thanksgiving day has great chance to meeting family, because many people is too busy to see their family in busy daily life. In dinner table, turkey and pumpkin pie is usually served, and many conversations take place.Here are two big questions which many people don't know, even you are Canadian. First, why Canada and U.S Thanksgiving day is different? Seconds, why people eat a turkey in Thanksgiving day dinner?
Actually, first Thanksgiving day in Canada is celebration not for harvest, but for surviving the long journey from England through storm fierce storms and icebergs in 1578. From later, the Canadian colonies continually celebrated this feast. In the early 17 century, France explorer added appreciating mean into Thanksgiving day. Originally, France has the feast at the end of harvest season. Many France settlers wanted to celebrate this feast constantly. They decided to use the day which celebrated surviving. In the contrast, U.S Thanksgiving day is generally believed to happened in 1621, Massachusetts. The settler decided to open the feast because of unusual harvest. After later, the feast was continually celebrated.
There are many theories why do Americans eat turkeys in Thanksgiving day. I want to introduce one interesting theory. At first Thanksgiving day table, deer meat and pumpkin pie is mainly served, not turkey. The change happened in 16 century England. While Queen Elizabeth was eating roast goose on harvest festival, news that England smashed all Spanish ship was delivered. As soon as hearing this news, Queen Elizabeth ordered one more goose to celebrate the triumph. This fact was spread on all England and goose was representing the feast foods. After then, when England people arrived America, they wanted to eat goose on Thanksgiving day. However, there are many turkeys instead of goose. Because of this, they started to eat turkey not goose.
Although there are many opinions related Thanksgiving day, it is certain that Thanksgiving day is representing America culture and having special meaning. I hope every LLI students will enjoy Thanksgiving day and feel what is Canada.
