How much do you know London
When I told my friends about my trip and said the name of the city (London) , their first question was , "England?" And I said No, London Canada, it was funny every time. Maybe you think it is a curious thing that there are many cities that have names that are similar to cities from England, names likes Brampton, Stratford and London of course. But the reality is that all or almost have a reason. The first settlers were the people from Europe (the British, French, and Spanish). For a long time there were many disputes and fighting over control between Britain and France and finally after many years the British won (However the French lands still preserve their language and laws). During all that time more immigrants arrived and it was normal to use names from England for the new towns. Talking about London, the answer is because in this area the British were established as majority and were loyal to England and its Monarchy.
* The Village of London was not founded until 1826.
* London was incorporated as a town in 1840.
* In 1855 London was incorporated as a “city”.
* John Graves Governor for Upper Canada in 1793 wanted to select the location of London as the future Capital and indented to change its name to Georgina in honor of King George III , but was rejected. The Capital back then was “York” (now Toronto).
